James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother.
